The author proposes an examination of the types of liminal citizenship by focusing on the Bolognese case of the villani: the forms examined were often aimed at exempting the municipality from fully integrating its taxpayers, who ended up enjoying benefits proportional to the guaranteed financial contribution. Literary sources are taken into consideration, which can sometimes give rise to misunderstandings or a stereotyping of the phenomenon, but which are accompanied here by the analysis of estimates and commissions.
