oapen.abstract.otherlanguageA characteristic feature of Polish agriculture is the fragmentation of farms, which on a European scale can be considered one of the greatest. Small farms, i.e. those with an area of less than 10 hectares, dominate in Poland, and family farms play a particularly important role in their structure. Although small family farms contribute many non-economic goods of an economic, social, societal, and environmental nature, they struggle with economic difficulties and market competition. Therefore, seeking new directions for development, such as organic production, becomes a necessity. The implementation of organic production is an opportunity for small farms, as it may contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural sector, the preservation of agricultural heritage in rural areas, and the improvement of these entities’ profitability.A review of foreign and domestic literature has made it possible to adopt the thesis that “organic production is a forward-looking direction of development for small family farms in Poland in light of the recommendations and preferences of the European Union, and at the same time a key element in improving the competitiveness and profitability of these farms.” Based on this, a research problem was formulated, which involves identifying and assessing the impact of organic production on the development of small family farms, in particular on the increase of generated income and the market attractiveness of production. The main objective of the study was to demonstrate that the decision to implement organic production has a positive impact on the long-term development of small family farms in Poland.
