EnglishAbstract
Written artefacts, that is, manuscripts and inscriptions, are traditionally studied because of their texts. Material aspects of these artefacts have become increasingly important, enriching the study of ancient history in numerous ways. Eleven case studies on the ancient world, including the Near East, Egypt, the Mediterranean, China and India, demonstrate the far-reaching impact of a holistic approach that considers materiality and content alike.
