EnglishRésumé
This book offers the first comprehensive historical research of liberation theology in Ecuador. Looking beyond the so-called "Bishop of the Indians" (L. Proaño), it demythologizes dominant narratives about post-conciliar Catholic activism in the Andes. This study, drawing on archival research and oral history, explores the entanglements of Latin American progressive Catholicism, local religious activism, and the formation of the indigenous movement. Rethinking Revolution of the Poncho sheds new light on the local expressions of a transnational phenomenon, and its links to human rights discourses and international development cooperation.
