Abstract

This innovative volume of twelve essays by international scholars examines the political uses and misuses of medieval images, objects, and sites in modern times (16th to 20th centuries). In case studies that range from Russia to the US and include catacombs, mosques, cathedrals, feudal castles, museums, and textbooks, it demonstrates how medieval works of art and architecture have been called into action to legitimize modern political agendas.
