oapen.abstract.otherlanguageThe anthology Texts and Readers presents a broad spectrum of peer-reviewed articles on text selection and approaches to reading in lower secondary school. At these grade levels, pupils encounter more complex and diverse texts than before, and expectations for reading competence increase noticeably during the lower secondary years. The contributions make the school’s reading and reading instruction highly relevant in the 2020s. They offer updated, research-based knowledge about reading through discussions of examples, texts, and dilemmas from reading instruction at the lower secondary level. The chapters can function individually and together as a starting point for reflection on how lower secondary pupils’ reading and interest in reading can be supported and further developed. The book is aimed at everyone who wants to strengthen pupils’ reading competence and create engaging and relevant reading instruction. The ambition is to inspire teachers, teacher students, researchers, and others interested in lower secondary reading instruction to see even more opportunities and to use a broader repertoire of approaches and text types.
