Ole Pedersen Haugsten had some unusual life experiences. As an adult he was admitted to the Reitgjerdet asylum, declared insane and dangerous to public safety. Nevertheless, he was discharged after only five months. He had to undergo observation at both Østmarka and Gaustad before he was finally declared healthy, after which he applied to the state for compensation for wrongful admission to an asylum. Finally, his life took entirely different turns when World War II hit Norway. The book tells the story of a single patient at a particular institution and brings us closer to how forensic psychiatry and central legal authorities functioned in the early 1900s. Ole’s story is full of ethical, professional, and moral gray areas that shape the role of institutional psychiatry.
