For many, outdoor life is about enjoying nature in free activity. In this book, we look at outdoor people as visitors in nature. Outdoor life gives us great freedom, but it also requires that we behave properly and show consideration. Norwegians like to think we know how to move about in nature—and that we have the right to do so. We do, but what is proper behavior can be another matter. When too many people engage in outdoor activities at the same time and place, activities must be managed and governed, which is a main theme of the book. Management is about steering people’s freedom—but in a way that provides good experiences. The book shows how outdoor life in Norway has developed, why activities must be managed, and how this happens through visitor management.
