The original forms of contractualism are related to the process of politicization of the concept of covenant. The aim of the work is to show how the concept of covenant underwent politicization, becoming a category to which reference was made to justify the belief that the government should be derived from the consent of the governed. Such a conviction we can found already at the ancient Israelites, who established their kings by prior approval of tribal elders, representing the people of Israel. A big role for the raise of the awareness that the consent of the governed is a necessary condition for the legality of the government, had the politically engaged followers of Calvinism – French Huguenots, or English Puritans.
