This volume brings together chapters on the conspicuous rise of idyllic genre parameters in the various literatures, illustrated media, and visual arts of the long nineteenth century. The theory behind the resurgence of this ancient genre is that the idyll, centered around the emotion of happiness, functions as a repository of affect. Building on Jean Paul, it can be understood with Aby Warburg as a "space for thought."
